Diddlyi Irish Dance and Music

Shane mcavinchey

Where ya from and where do ya dance??

So, I thought it would be a good idea to start a discussion allowing people to introduce themselves and tell eachother about who they are, where they dance, what school/company they dance with etc... I will start..

My name is Shane McAvinchey, I have danced since the age of six. I started dancing in Tipperary and competed under the fine instruction of Anne Callanan ADCRG. I stopped competing at the age of 16 and toured with Riverdance for nearly four years. I then moved to Munich where I have been living and teaching the Tir na nOg school ever since and loving every minute.

I am a temporary registered teacher with An Coimisiun but I sat my TCRG exam about three weeks ago and am awaiting results so Fingers crossed ;-)

So, Lets here all about you!! Dont forget to drop by my page and say hi...

Ciao!

Shane

hi everybody,
My name is Anita and I started dancing at the ripe old age of 20. I dance with the Redmond school of Irish Dance in the Netherlands. The reason why I started Irish: I needed a new hobby/challenge. I used to ride dressage and by the time I started irish, I got bored with that and even more with the people at my stable (the kind: you don't own a horse so you don't count) About six months after starting irish I quit horse riding and I haven't looked back since.

Hi everyone! I´m Ivonne and I live in Wiesbaden. I started dancing with Tir na nog (Mary) in Würzburg 6 years ago.
But as I finished my studies 2004 in Würzburg I moved to Dublin for 6 month. That was a great opportunity to dance with Ronan McCormack. Learned a lot about dancing.
I would have loved to start ID way earlier (my irish cousins used to dance) , but at that time (1985) there were no dancing schools nearby (think the only one was in Munich). But I am happy to have the chance to dance as an adult.
Right now I dance with Natalie Westerdale ("Fiddle and Feet") in Wiesbaden. Anne-Marie Cunningham gives Workshops there for us twice a year.
The best experience I had so far was the summer camp in Salzburg with Anne-Marie, Shane, Kelly and Isobell. It was hard work but so much worth it!
....Pain is good....

Hi Everyone!! My name is Ashley Lubbe and I have been dancing since I were 7 yeras old. I'm 15 years old, still in school and my favourite activity is irishdancing. I'm From the Netherlands, The Hague. Fell in love with dancign and willl never stop. I saw at the Irish Holiday market in The Netherlands and started dancing a week after. This has been a bit of a rough year, but normally speaking I can always tell a bit of progress. When I dance I just sort of forget about all of the things going on in my live and focus on the dancing. It's kind of a thereaputic thing for me. I love to work on my dancing, even though I am not really that good at it. Still, I don't care I just love to dance and will never be able to actuallly quite. This is probably me.

-xxx- Ashley

Hi everybody! I'm Jenny from Germany and I'm almost sure that I'm the grandma under the ones, who started Irish Dancing, because I started in April 2006, when I was 24 years old... But fortunately music was important for me since I came to school, although I only sang in different choirs through the years. I think that and the different sports I made ( horse riding, table tennis, handball and volleyball) made it possible for me to learn really fast at the beginning. I was very happy about that, because everywere I read sth. about Irish Dance stood that you should start as a child...
But I think in Germany nowadays it is usual to see so "old" dancers like me. And I am very proud that I got my first dance into intermediate (my treble Jig) when I was dancing for one year. So you see, it's not totally hopeless to start that late. ;)
My first 3-4 lessons I had in Merseburg in Eastern Germany. The teacher was Tec Dian. I was so amazed by this sport that I wanted to continue it, after moving into the south of Germany, to Kuchen. Thats appr. 60km far away from Stuttgart. Tec told me from Elaine Walker - my teacher since then - and although I have to drive 180km every day I go there, it's worth that for me. But because of this big distance I can only go there once a week, but I practice at home to improve myself.

I'm Christie and I've been dancing for almost 6 years. I'm 19 now so I guess you could call me a late-bloomer :) I've been dancing at the Quinn School of Irish Dance in Michigan for this entire time and I just started competing regularly this past summer. I've now got my treble jig in OPW and the rest of my dances are novice. Before that I stuck to performances instead of competitions, but I decided that I might as well get some shiny medals :)

It's awesome to think that there so many IDers in the world! I had no idea that it was so popular in places like Germany and Mexico! sweeeeet :)

Hi all! My name is Cécile, I live in Paris, France and I dance at the Sarah Clark Academy.
I started dancing a little over 3 years ago, when I was 29 and I now dance in intermediate level at feises... which makes me the oldest person to have answered in that forum so far! I did ballet during all my childhood and teenage years and tap dance when I was a teenager.
I had wanted to do Irish Dancing since I had seen video tape of Riverdance when I spent the summer of 1995 in England but I had to wait for almost 9 years until a proper Irish Dancing school opened in Paris. I was so happy when it did!!! I haven't stopped dancing since then except last year for a few weeks when I sparined my ankle and right now, for the past month and a half, as I've torn my calf muscle, still one more month without dancing :(

Hi everyone! I am from Agen, which is a town you don't know... anyway I live in the south-west of France where there are no Irish Dancing activities, except for some set dancing, which is kind of fun but not as challenging as step dancing. A year ago I had to make a decision: travel to attend some workshops! My first Irish Dancing lesson took place in Lyon and I could meet other dancers and get information about additional workshops! I went to Rognac last July and met Joanne Doyle and Breandan de Gallai, Ronan McCormak and Dearbhla Lennon! A month after that I attended Salzburg Summer Camp! We had great fun with Anne Marie Cunningham, Kelley O'Boyle, Isobel Cunningham and of course the legenday Shane McAvinchey, thanks to you guys I started feeling like a real Irish Dancer!
Right now things got pretty quiet, I go to Nantes for some workshops with Sandrine Gautier, one of the few certified teacher in France, but let me tell ya, I can't wait for next summer and kill my legs in some week long workshop!
