I'm not sure about the music, but I know that when I dance, it always lifts my spirits. I think physical activity is a better mood-helper than music.

About me

I am a 23 year old Prelims dancer. I started dancing when I was 14 and danced through my senior year of high school, making it all the way to Prelims in two and a half years! Then I took a break for five years for college! I used to go to the Burke School of Irish Dance in Pittsburgh (now Burke-Conroy). Then for college I moved to Rochester, NY and eventually found the Young School of Irish dance, where I have been ever since. I just started competing again this summer and it has been one of the most up-and-down years ever!

My placings this year:

Rochester Feis: 4th out of 14
Catskill Feis: 16th out of 20 (bad day!)
Feis at the Falls: 3rd out of 8
Southern Tier: 1st out of 10
Syracuse: 10th out of 18
Thousand Islands: 10th out of 17
Pittsburgh: 1st out of 7
Finger Lakes: 3rd out of 7
Pittsburgh Winterfeis: 2nd out of 9
Mary Woodgate: 12th out of 16 (definitely wasn't ready for this feis!)
West Virginia: 8th out of 16
Buffalo: 6th out of 10 (and after falling twice!)

I've gone a whole year now...
Rochester: 5th out of 12
Feis at the Falls: 6th out of 10 (Dancing on two injuries, not too disappointed)
Southern Tier: 4th out of 13 (Still dancing on injuries, even better)
Syracuse Feis: 8th out of 22 (in my new dress!)

Only one more first to go....!

What Irish things do I play, dance, say, sing or other:

I just dance, really. =) But I love Gaelic Storm! Does that count?

How many years have you been Irish dancing?

4 years at Burke, then I stopped for four years. I've been with Young for almost two years now.

Favourite Irish Dance Show

Riverdance. It was what eventually convinced my mother to let me start taking lessons!

I love this about Irish Dancing:

I love dancing and competing and meeting new friends at every feis I go to!

A few weeks ago there was a poll asking readers if they felt the judging system in Irish Dance was fair. For the most part, I don't mind the judging system, but when stuff like this happens it always kind of hits home...

I live in Mid-Atlantic region in the US, which requires 3 first places to move into Open Champs instead of 2, like most other regions. That rule, I'll never understand either... or at least why it's only one region instead of all of them. It makes going to an out-of-region feis… Continue

Down About Dancing...

Lately my dancing has been on a huge down-curve. It makes me really sad. Right at the beginning of November I injured my right leg and my dancing has not been the same since. My endurance has plummeted and my steps have suffered because of it.

The Oireachtas was terrible. I think it was the worst I've ever placed. I barely even finished my treble jig due to the pain. In my second step, I had stumbled and felt a really sharp pain go up my leg where my injury was, so I danced terribly after that.… Continue
