What exactly am I getting?
Simply put, Diddlyi is like learning from a DVD except now you get new lessons and technique training videos online from different teachers. Plus, these videos are published on a social networking website (like Facebook), so the learning experience is interactive. This means you get support and motivation from the other dancers around you and from the Diddlyi Dance Masters.
Will Diddlyi suit my level of dancing?
Yes! Diddlyi is open for all levels from basic to advanced. We have designed different training videos specifically for each level to keep you challenged.
Is it really that good?
We really think so. We have spent over three years talking to dancers like you around the world. We learned that there was a great need for additional learning material, support and motivation. We have also worked closely with some of the biggest Irish dance stars out there to make sure that Diddlyi is a fun, exciting and useful experience.
Is it really going to help me?
Yes. Diddlyi is the extra support that many Irish dancers need so you can push yourself to get better, practice in your own time and see styles from other teachers. And Diddlyi is obviously a perfect solution for the many Irish dancing fans around the world who do not have access to proper tuition. Most of all, we hope it helps you have more fun Irish dancing.
What about all the free stuff on sites like YouTube?
We think the Internet is great! You should totally have a look around for any learning resources you can find. We can even help – check out all the free Irish dancing videos on My.Diddlyi.com.
But Diddlyi is much more than just random Irish dancing videos – we have worked very hard to create a place where you can easily get the best Irish dance training videos served to you in a format that you can follow and learn from. And all within a supportive and motivational environment.
Will my teacher mind?
Not at all (just ask our first Dance Master and registered TCRG teacher Shane McAvinchey). Diddlyi works by giving you extra support so you can practice and have fun experiencing other styles of Irish dancing and technique training in your own time.
It is important to remember that every teacher teaches in the way in which they were taught. A movement or a dance taught by a Diddlyi Dance Master may be completely different to what you may have learned from another teacher doing the same movements. While Irish dance IS a traditional dance form and there are some movements and dances which must be performed in a set way by all teachers, it is always progressing. Every teacher has a different style depending on where and how they were taught.
Why do teachers use different ways of describing the same things?
Depending on location, age or dance history, each teacher may have different names for different movements. Unlike ballet or other more established dance forms, Irish dancing is still progressing and new movements are added all the time. Nobody has ever sat down and made an “Irish dance terminology” dictionary and therefore there are different names for movements depending on the teacher. The best thing you can do is keep watching the videos and you will get used to the various terminologies.
How much time will I have to spend on this?
It’s completely up to you. But like with any skill, it takes time and determination to be the best you want to be. We know this, so we have designed Diddlyi to work with you like a tool as you learn – driving, motivating and supporting you.
Does the CLRG Association Rule prevent me from using Diddlyi?
Not at all! There is no direct feedback, support or criticism given by the teacher (the Dance Masters) to those who are learning from the instructional videos. So it is just like learning from a DVD (such as the CLRG approved Olive Hurley’s series).
How does Diddlyi work technically?
Diddlyi is a website so it will run properly in Internet browsers such as Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari. It is has many videos, so you will need a broadband connection to view them properly. The videos are able to expand to the full size of a screen so you’ll be able to learn from pretty much any computer monitor (or a TV screen if you have your computer hooked up to it).
Should I be concerned about my child being on this website?
We are committed to safety for your children on the Internet (Paul McAvinchey (Diddlyi co-founder) gave talks on ‘Child Safety on the Internet’ to schools in Ireland.). We have nearly five years experience running the Diddlyi websites for mostly young people. And we have spoken to many parents about their concerns. We employ people to monitor our websites 24/7 and use the most up to date technologies to screen users of our services.
Parents are also encouraged to sign up with their children and experience Diddlyi together.
