It’s undeniable that one of the biggest rewards of Irish dancing is the friendships you make along the way. Whether it’s dancers at your school, people you feis with, or those you follow on Tumblr, one thing’s for sure – Irish dance friends make some of the best friends ever, and here’s why –
– They’ll never hold the phrase “I can’t, I have dance” against you.
– You can see each other in mounds of synthetic curls, more makeup than a TV news anchor, legs faux-tanned 5 shades darker and not even bat a fake eyelash.
– When you’re waiting in line somewhere and you start shuffling through your steps, not only will dance friends not judge you for randomly hoping about to inaudible music…they’ll probably join in.
– They know that the REAL most wonderful time of the year is March.
– They won’t shake their head at you for being glued to internet feeds and live streams during Worlds/NANs/All Irelands/Great Brits etc. …In fact if they’re not watching with you, then you’re probably texting each other updates.
– Because who else can you watch “Jig” with over, and over, and over again?
– They understand that getting 7th, 3rd, or 20th can often be just as big a deal as getting a 1st.
– Injured? No one knows that feeling better than other Irish dancers. You can count on them for advice (from experience), empathy, and reassurance.
– It takes a special kind of relationship to have someone check if your solo dress is too short, safety pin things to your undergarments, or see you with post-wig hair, and not think anything of it.
– Whether you have an off-day at a feis, or you do better than you ever dreamed – dance friends will proudly congratulate, and encourage you, every time.
– The biggest reason of all that Irish dancers are some of the best friends – It’s that instant connection you will always have when you meet another Irish dancer. There’s a rapport that comes with our shared passion for this sport, and a sense of community that truly does make Irish dance friends something more…it makes us family.
