The Irish dancers who win are the ones who don’t mind losing. It’s true, there are a few dancers out there with natural talent who win almost every competition they enter, but there aren’t many. Most of us have to lose a few, sometimes even a lot, before we ever get close to winning.
Let’s say you’ve been competing for a few years and you have decided to set a goal to win at a feis before the end of the year. You’ve worked hard and developed the confidence to know you have a good chance of winning. You’ve decided it’s your time and you are ready to win.
That’s when you need to ask yourself a very important question. You know you’re ready to win, but are you ready to lose?
Chances are, if you’ve lost before, you’re going to lose again, and maybe even again… and again. Are you ready for that? If you really want to win, you have to be. A dancer who is truly determined is ready to lose 50 times before getting their chance to shine.
[It is important to set] dance goals for ourselves, both big and small. Don’t get discouraged when you don’t reach your goal after the 1st, 2nd or even 6th try. Every dancer has to go through a lot of failures before enjoying success. Don’t be the one who gives up simply because the road to victory is longer than you anticipated.
